I started my Read for Animals project because I learned to love and respect animals from my parents, especially from my father. He risked his neck climbing up a tree to put a fallen baby squirrel back into the nest, fixed the broken beak of a young stork with – of course what else – duct tape. But it worked; the stork came back next summer to nest on top of the school building.
Together with a few author friends we are putting a book together that will benefit many of our furry, feathered and scaly friends. There are lots of animal lovers out there who don't know how to help, or they feel that a donation of $2-3 is not enough, but buying this book will make them feel that they are helping animals while enjoying the short stories in the book.
I never had a pet that came from a puppy-mill or breeders, and I never had a pure-bred dog or cat. All my pets were either adopted from shelters, or they found us. We live in the Catskill mountains and unfortunately the "summer people" who rent a home or own one as summer home, often bring puppies and kittens with them for the entertainment for their kids for the summer. When autumn comes, they move back to the cities where pets are a nuisance or not allowed in the apartment building.
Some of them just close the door behind them leave the animals outside to fend for themselves. Since we moved to the country side from the Bronx over 20 years ago, eight cats and three dogs found us and stayed with us until they had to go to animal heaven
I want to help animals in need, any way I can. So being a writer, I thought that I could use my God given talent of story telling to help struggling animal shelters. Our furry, feathered and scaly friends who are not adopted from shelters need our help to survive, they depend on us for food, shelter and loving homes.
I wrote a few funny and true stories about my pets, fox pups that grew up in my backyard. I invited a few author friends to join me in this project to publish a book Read for Animals and donate the money collected from the sales after publishing fees to different animal shelters every three months.
If you would like to join us in our effort to help struggling animal shelters, please purchase this book when it's published. Thank you for your help.

About me:
I’ve been writing Alternative Medicine related books in English and Hungarian. I love healing as passionately as I love to write and read. Growing up with a father who was a closet reader (having a macho image allowed him to read only in secret which he shared with me after I caught him reading my book ‘The lady of the camellias’ and he left a few teardrops on the pages) he introduced me to many great books. I was playing with the idea of writing a fantasy story peppered with historical facts for a while. The history of the Huns always fascinated me - they were my ancestors - although I decided that it was a stupid idea after I started reading about how to write a fiction book - I am not a literary genius, I have no idea how to create a good story line or form characters and make up a plot - I thought, but the idea didn’t leave me alone. I kept adding events and dialogs in my head to Ilona’s story.
Not knowing how to do something properly had never prevented me from a accepting a good challenge before, so I sat down by the computer and began writing. I've never been good at following rules or formulas, therefore I discarded the instructions and I made up my own rules. I began writing Ilona's story as a diary. Just for my own enjoyment, writing down the ideas that are swirling in my head is far better than being haunted by them. I thought. I kept writing for months, and soon I realized that I never had so much fun doing anything in my life before. Somehow the characters came to life on their own, and they developed under my furiously typing fingers. Pretty soon I realized that I wrote about four hundred pages already.
I gave the manuscript to my friends to read, and they urged me to publish it. I was elated when I received the publisher’s review about my story that said “I want to give you my overall impression of your work: You have a terrific writing style. You have obviously done a significant amount planning and preparation in crafting your work. Your prose is nicely written with details that capture the reader. Right from the start your plot was very engaging. You do a nice job of slowly making your way through the story with details and a certain voice that allows your reader to really interact with the characters (who are all round and very nicely developed). The greatest value in fiction, it seems to me, lies in what we can learn about our own lives when we take time to analyze someone else’s — even if that someone else is just a character in a story. Characterization is one of the most important elements of any successful story. I always love it when I leave a story feeling like I know the characters. This is true for your prose. So many authors rush through their stories without really developing them. Not you. Your book read like a movie in my mind. You have crafted a quality piece of writing.”

I'm honored to receive such a wonderful and detailed review. Without bloggers and reviewers like you bringing books to the reader's attention, my story would stay on the virtual shelf collecting virtual dust.

Guarded Secrets By Erika M Szabo ~ Review By Romina
Rating rules for Lindsay and Jane's Views and Reviews
5 Stars - Amazing, couldn't put it down. 4 Stars - Excellent. 3 Stars - I like it. 2 Stars - It was OK. 1 Star - Couldn't finish.
Guarded Secrets was given a 5***** by reviewer Romina
Ilona is a born healer. Descended from an ancient tribe of Hun.
In her 29 years she hasn’t learnt much about her heritage, due to the premature death of her parents. In keeping with rules and tradition only her parents were allowed to teach her the truth surrounding her destiny and in turn leading her toward a life she would have never imagined.
With only long lost memories to help her she sets herself on a journey of self-discovery and acceptance.
Ever since they met as children Ilona has been in love with her best friend Bela, seemingly unrequited she settles with the incredible friendship they have built together.
Until a handsome stranger starts work at Ilona’s hospital.
Zoltan is incredibly handsome, clever and also a Hun descendant. Ilona feels an increasing attraction to him and it scares her. Why does he feel so familiar and why does she feel so strongly after only meeting for a moment?
As sinister occurrences begin to surround her she believes somebody wants her dead leading her very dear friends to reveal some closely guarded secrets.
With her ever increasing yearning to learn more about her destiny Ilona is now in a fight for her life and the lives of those she loves.
Who is she destined to be?
I had no idea when I started this book I would become as involved in the story as I did. This book took me on such an incredible journey, it became a learning process too. With every chapter comes a guide to plants and flowers and their meanings, something I hadn’t known before. This is a book integrating fact and fiction creating a wonderful historical adventure. I loved each and every character and every surprise they created along the way. I loved Zoltan from the start and even though there is a part in the book that would make a reader think otherwise I knew he would be redeemed, gosh did I hold my breath in those moments. So many emotions run through this story and easily takes the reader along for the ride, I was elated and relieved by the final outcome, almost like I’d been through it myself. I believe that yes this book is long when reading both parts together like I did but incredibly worth a reader’s time in doing so, I can’t wait to see what this author comes up with next, I’d love to know how this story carries on.

Lorinda J. Taylor author
Lorinda is a retired librarian with an M.A. in English and a Masters in Library Science.  She worked in several academic libraries in Colorado, Texas, and Missouri before returning to live in Colorado Springs, the place of her birth.  After writing fantasy and science fiction for years, she recently embarked on the exciting adventure of independent publishing.  To this point, she has published one novella, a two-volume novel, and three volumes of a series retelling myths in terms of her intelligent termite civilization.  Her writings combine elements of science fiction, fantasy, literary fiction, off-world adventure, and psychological fiction, and always leave the reader with something to think about at the end of each story.
About Lorinda's writing career:
Lorinda J. Taylor (aka TermiteWriter) began writing fantasy in 1969 after discovering J. R. R. Tolkien.  She wrote industriously until 1983, making an unsuccessful effort to publish something late in that period.  Family responsibilities then forced her to suspend writing until the year 2000, when she turned in the direction of literary science fiction, creating a future history and a world for intelligent extraterrestrial termites.  She decided to self-publish in 2011 and has published a novella, a two-volume novel, and three volumes of a series, as well as a novelette pulled from her earlier writings.  Her books have received favorable reviews, but she is still waiting to become a bestseller!

Her books are available in paperback and for Kindle and all e-readers:

v.2:  The Wound That Has No Healing
During the first contact with the termite people, the troubled relationship between the expedition leader and the team’s anthropologist intersects with the civil unrest in the termite fortress to produce an explosive climax.

The Labors of Ki’shto’ba Huge-Head, a Series
This series takes place in the termite world following the end of The Termite Queen, when the Shshi Champion Ki’shto’ba Huge-Head and the Remembrancer Di’fa’kro’mi decide to set out on an epic quest to reach the sea.

v. 2: The Storm-Wing
In the Nu’wiv’mi Marsh, Ki’shto’ba and its Companions are forced to do battle with the Marsh Guardians, huge sauro-avians that attack from the air; as the Quest continues Ki’shto’ba slays more monsters, and the Companions spend time among the Marchers, where ominous prophecies threaten to derail the Quest.
v. 3: The Valley of Thorns
Ki’shto’ba and its Companions return to Marcher lands to fight alongside the High Commander in defense of the fortress of Wei’loi’bao’cha, but the enemy is treacherous, resulting in a debacle.

I am not sure what to call myself. Artist, writer, poet…I enjoy writing poetry and have been writing for years. I remember writing small poems when I was in grade school and high school. I have a collection in a drawer like everyone who writes. I have been lucky enough to have a song to my credit (co-written), I have a poem in Klarissa’s Dream and now an addition to this book for another very worth- while cause. I have been doing volunteer work for various charities for years and this is just one more to add to the list.I have enjoyed the arts and until I met a friend Elisha Fraser aka Shebat Legion, I never really thought anything about having my works published.I am a single mom who enjoys the outdoors and spending time with my children and family as well as my 2 pets. Koda the Black Lab/Sheppard Mix and Missy the multi-colored tabby that I adopted from someone else.I have always had pets as a child and as an adult and could not imagine not having a pet in my house. They are wonderful companions and protectors.
